Why does one transcription company offer a cheap service and another offer a much more expensive service?

Firstly you need to consider who will transcribe your dictation. Very often the lower rate transcribers do not have English as their first language and therefore do not have the grammar skills required to deliver high quality transcriptions. The higher end transcription companies will include proofreading and light editing as part of their fee, allowing the document to be used immediately whenever you receive it.

Secondly you need to consider your turnaround requirement. An hour of audio will take between three and four hours to transcribe, depending on the subject matter, quality of recording, accents and the number of speakers. A single transcriber can only transcribe one dictation at a time therefore if you have a large amount of dictation, a specialist transcription pool will achieve faster turnaround times.

Although email has become the principal method of communication in business it is not the most secure way of delivering sensitive material. A more secure method is by SSL encrypted file transfer. High end transcription companies will have invested heavily in developing methods of secure file transfer and some include a file management solution with full reporting facilities, allowing you to upload multiple files, set turnaround times and priorities.

In summary, you need to consider what level of service you are expecting. A low cost service could give you adequate results but you might have to wait longer for the transcript and it may require editing when you receive it. High end transcription companies offer turnaround times to suit your needs, a secure delivery method, experienced transcribers and all the other benefits that you should expect like Professional Indemnity Insurance, Public Liability Insurance and registration with the ICO (Information Commissioners Office).
